The paper shredder took on mythical status during the Enron saga. Who shredded what and when they shredded it became pertinent information in unraveling the companys alleged misdeeds. Contacted for a column in a regional newspaper at the time investigators were looking into Enron-related shredder shenanigans, Willie Geiser of Allshred Services, Toledo, Ohio, acknowledged that the document destruction-related news was helping his business. Legitimate security factors–not cover-ups–are the main reasons companies like Allshred have grown in importance. Identity theft has mushroomed as a white-collar crime, and thorough information and document destruction services can help prevent identify thefts spread. DEDICATED TO SERVICE. The distant observer may conclude that a document destruction firm is interchangeable with a paper recycling company. Geiser vehemently disagrees.

The warm-blooded flipside to Olivier Assayass Demonlover (2002), Clean is similarly concerned with internationally disseminated media product, here pop music, with all its damning and redemptive qualities. Maggie Cheung is Emily Wang, a junkie-in-recovery vilified by the music press for the textbook O.D. death of her washed-up rockstar boyfriend; she retreats to Paris in hopes of getting straight and earning back her son from his guardian grandfather (Nick Nolte, in a wonderfully shy, creaky performance). Buoyed by fuzzy, weightless Brian Eno synths, Clean is simply as emotionally luminous an experience as the movies can offer.

Two future brides discovered engagement rings in unusual places. And one newlywed couple met at church. The couples are pictured on these pages. Wayne Becker turned the marriage proposal into a fine art. When Wayne wanted to propose to Sara Martin, he took her to an art gallery opening in Wichita on Dec. 1, 2001. It was a formal, black tie affair. The couple visited various rooms, viewing the art and sipping champagne.

No minimum value applies to the ring, and loose stones qualify if they are set within a reasonable time period. Other features of the program are automatic coverage for mysterious disappearance; worldwide coverage; 100% cash out option on all total losses; up to 150% of the scheduled amount in market value coverage; generous pairs and sets coverage; and the option to choose where and if to replace a ring.

Clean living is money in this bank Going beyond the usual corporate white paper and aluminum can recycling programs, First California Bank plans to put its money where its garbage is. The La Mesa-based institution will place $5 per customer check order and reorder and 10 cents for each automated teller transaction in its new Environmental Series Fund. The bank established the fund to finance local environmental programs, said Rich Turner, vice president and marketing director for the bank.
THE big four banks lag far behind their Internet competition in service and value for money, say their customers. More than half think the big four - Natwest, Lloyds TSB, HSBC and Barclays - run accounts for their own advantage and almost half think the banks make excessive profits. Independent market researchers Taylor Nelson Sofres found that just under half those surveyed feel that the banks rip them off.

IT is hardly surprising there is a growing crisis in social housing with no new council homes having been built for two decades. Soaring property prices coupled with fewer homes available has led to local authorities being unable to meet demand. And regenerating existing stock cannot be done quickly enough to ease the problem in the short term.

This study, conducted in the Netherlands, compared the vitamin C status of three groups of elderly women aged 65 years or older: 54 nursing home residents, 29 women living in service flats where meal service was provided by the nursing-home kitchen, and 52 women living independently in the community. Food consumption data were obtained using a modified dietary history; for the nursing home residents, all foods served for one day and the returned leftovers were weighed, and amounts of food served and returned for an additional nine days were estimated by the dietitians. Blood samples were collected for nutrient analysis. Dietary vitamin C intake was significantly lower among the nursing home residents than in the other two groups. The nursing home residents also had significantly lower plasma vitamin C levels, and the proportion of subjects with vitamin C levels in the deficient or marginal ranges was much higher in the nursing home residents than in either of the other two groups. Thirty-five percent of the women living in nursing homes had deficient plasma vitamin C levels, and an additional 23% had levels in the marginal range. Four percent of the women living in service flats had deficient levels and 4% had marginal levels. None of the women living independently had deficient levels; 2% had marginal levels. The nursing home residents had lower vitamin C intakes than the other women because they ate less and because they selectively avoided some foods that are important sources of vitamin C, particularly fresh fruit. The food preparation and distribution practices used in the nursing home also caused a substantial loss of vitamin C, but the loss was not much greater than that which is assumed to occur in home food preparation.
TUCSON, ARIZ. — Customary vitamin D supplementation and springtime sun exposure in the southern United States are inadequate to protect elderly African American women from vitamin D deficiency, data from a prospective cohort study show. Darker skin pigmentation and aging are known to decrease the bodys ability to synthesize vitamin D. But it has generally been assumed that sun exposure in southern latitudes is either sufficient to provide adequate vitamin D levels or would reduce the need for supplementation. The study has huge clinical implications and supports the belief of a growing number of clinicians that the recommended daily allowance of 400 IU vitamin D supplement is too low, Dr. Weaver said in an interview. The study included 44 African American women living in central Texas who were given 1,000 mg of calcium with 400-IU vitamin D tablets daily for 6 weeks, and told not to make any changes in diet or sun exposure. Clinical evaluations were made at baseline in April and 6 weeks later in June.

AIRLINE INDUSTRY INFORMATION-(C)1997-2002 M2 COMMUNICATIONS LTD A Lufthansa aircraft en route from Frankfurt to Munich was forced to turn back shortly after takeoff due to a defective coffee machine. ShredSmarts document destruction truck will shred the documents, which will then be recycled by Goldman Recycling. Participants will also receive ID theft prevention educational materials from the BBB.
Recent media reports about Arthur Anderson LLP and Enron Corp. imply that paper shredding is primarily a cover-up for wrong-doing. However, both the National Association for Information Destruction (NAID) and the owner of an area shredding company say that document shredding is a sound-and ethical-business practice. “Proper shredding guarantees security. For liability issues, to protect against identity theft, deciding what to shred is very basic, anything with identifiers on it-a persons name, phone number, address, date of birth, social security number, thats a big one.” Recent federal legislation requires businesses to protect the security and confidentiality of patients and customers personal data. The Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (known as HIPAA) suggests that appropriate safeguards would include shredding documents containing protected health information prior to disposal. The Gramm-Leach-Biley Act of 1999 (also known as the Financial Services Modernization Act), doesnt mention shredding specifically, but requires that financial institutions and insurance companies discarding any paper documents containing personal information must safely destroy them.

“There are [more than] 30 million Americans who have no health insurance and another 20 million who have inadequate health insurance,” says Rep. Louis Stokes (D0Ohio), chairman of the Congressional Black Caucus Health Brain Trust. “It is mandatory that we begin to try and give Americans–particularly minorities–adequate health care as a right.” The Bush plan would give people not covered by Medicaid tax credits, and families making less than $80,000 a year tax deductions to pay for medical costs. He would also pass laws to ensure that even chronically ill patients could receive health insurance. The plan has received a cool reception on Capitol Hill, and alternate proposals, including a full-scale, government-paid national health insurance plan, are under development. But what does America really want for its health care system? The views are many.
FOR THE uninitiated, medical and health insurance is a relatively new class of insurance in Malaysia compared to motor, fire or personal accident insurance. A lot has been written about it, but there continues to be confusion over what health insurance really is.

Will McCains teeth create voter uncertainty like Nixons five oclock shadow? BEVERLY HILLS, Calif., Sept. 25 /PRNewswire/ — While most of the focus in the upcoming Presidential debates will be about the words that come out of the candidates mouths, many voters may instead be paying attention to whats IN their mouths — namely their teeth and the quality of their smile. Prominent Beverly Hills cosmetic dentist Dr. Kevin Sands says that especially in the debates, a healthy, clean smile can be a candidates best running mate. And in the case of this Presidential election, Senator Barack Obama beats Senator John McCain by a landslide. In this American Idol age, there is no question that Senator Obama and his mega-watt smile will appeal more to voters who base their decisions on style, says Sands from his Beverly Hills office. For many Americans, appearance has become part of the criterion when choosing whom to trust. We can look at our TV anchors and celebrities as proof. Sands should know. He counts among his clients some of the biggest names in Hollywood or the concert stage, including Britney Spears, Charlie Sheen, Robert Downey Jr., Taylor Swift, Josh Holloway and Carmen Electra.
THE DENTAL INDUSTRY IS seeing patient numbers rise, but reasons to visit are evolving from preventive to cosmetic. The shift of services in the past 15 years can be attributed to many factors, though most in the business agree that two of the main reasons are technological advances that make complicated procedures easier and the fact that teeth are lasting longer. Some things have not changed in the 30 years Ive been in practice. Were still very preventative-oriented. We still promote flossing, brushing, fluoride; were big proponents of fluoridation because its so cost-effective and it has such community benefits, said Steve Kilpatrick, a longtime Fort Smith dentist and president of the Arkansas State Dental Association.

Real estate practice is a broad and widely defined area of the law. In a pristine sense it deals with the esoteric subject of real property law and titles. In practice the subject matter handled by real property lawyers is much broader. Many of the areas of law within real estate practice are areas of specialty themselves. Real estate lawyers examine and evaluate real property titles, handle real estate sales, purchases and other transactions, foreclose mortgages, represent developers and contractors in drafting and negotiating development and construction agreements, handle real estate financing, structure and draft the governing documents for planned developments such as condominiums, serve as counsel to community and condominium associations, draft and negotiate leases, litigate title, boundary, and other land disputes, and advise clients respecting zoning and land: use matters. The examination of real estate titles requires knowledge of corporations and other forms of business organization, wills, trusts and estates, and a practitioner handling transactions must understand contractual, business, and tax subjects as well. The subjects that are tested on the certification exam attest to this diversity. They are title issues; real estate finance; environmental and land use; condominiums and homeowner associations; landlord tenant; closings; sellers, buyers, brokers, and title insurers; real property litigation; taxation of entities and other tax issues; and ethics. Some hold an impression that at least some aspects of the real estate practice are not challenging, that the practice is increasingly title company, form, and paralegal driven, and that when business is light any lawyer with a good paralegal can Ado real estate closings. This impression is not accurate. As with any area of practice, successfully representing clients in real estate matters requires knowledge, skill, and experience. The diversity in real estate practice may mean that no one lawyer can be an expert in each practice area encompassing the modern real property practice or that are tested by the certification program. That, however, is not a reason to not seek certification. The committee recognizes that few lawyers are likely to possess specific and detailed expertise in each of the many subjects that fall within the scope of real estate.

Health is a measure of quality of life that is difficult to define and measure. In the 1940s, the World Health Organization (WHO) defined health as a state of complete physical, mental, and social well-being and not merely the absence of disease or infirmity. At the first International Conference on Health Promotion in Ottawa, Canada (1986), the Ottawa Charter for Health Promotion built on the WHOs concept and further defined health as a resource for everyday life. a positive concept emphasizing social and personal resources, as well as physical capabilities. Good health enables one to function independently within a changing environment.

Were always looking 10 years into the future and attempting to get there in five years. The two essential keys to this are effective communications and employee education. The benefits of having a building connected directly with its management firm go beyond management issues, however. With each building wired into our database, serving both Colliers ABR and Colliers International and its more than 190 offices worldwide, every building can be queried by any of our Colliers partners to determine availabilities. This has an added advantage if we are the leasing agents for the building, where we can provide space listings instantaneously.Computerized maintenance programs in office buildings are another trend that have been in the marketplace for several years and continue to grow in strength. These programs provide the ability to schedule and generate work orders, manage preventive maintenance tasks, track all equipment histories, organize and track inventories, manage purchasing functions, maintain complete confidential labor records, and allocate resources. Dynamic data is tracked by the system, thereby projecting equipment failure before it happens. A problem can be fixed before it occurs, avoiding costly downtime. Ideally, this program can be linked to a headquarters operation which can then manage all the building systems.

Real estate is a popular investment among Canadians. There are several advantages to investing in real estate. Real estate is leveraged. You may pay only a fraction (as low as 10%) of what the property is worth when you buy it. Real estate has utility. If you buy stocks or bonds, you cannot do anything with them; but when you buy real estate, you can use it until you sell it. For example, you can live in a house.

And never lose sight of the way you want to serve your members, because thats why youre looking for a core processor in the first place.
H UNTING As a human activity, hunting is magnified in its significance by a deceptively simple feature: the evasiveness or resistance exhibited routinely by prey. Because of the behavioral challenges that it presents, hunting has had far-reaching consequences for key aspects of human social, psychological, and cultural life. Since the mid-1960s, for example, anthropologists have argued that hunting may have been a powerful and fundamental force shaping the very nature of cooperation and sharing among early humans. One such claim involves what the behavioral ecologist Bruce Winterhalder calls the risk reduction hypothesis. The failure rate of hunters is notoriously high. Even among experienced, highly skilled subsistence hunters who pursue big game animals, any one hunt is much more likely to result in failure than in success. Studying the Hadza of Tanzania in 1993, the anthropologist Kristen Hawkes reported that when hunting big game, Hadza men failed to make a kill 97 of every 100 days that they hunted. When a large game animal is killed, it often represents a windfall in excess of what any one hunter and his or her immediate family can consume. These circumstances promote reciprocity and sharing among hunters. By sharing the meat provided by a successful kill, a hunter effectively buys insurance against failure in future hunts. When, in the future, he or she fails to kill prey, other successful hunters with whom meat has been shared previously will reciprocate and provide meat to the unsuccessful hunter. The science writer Matt Ridley argues that the cooperation and reciprocity associated with hunting may help constitute the basis of systems of moral and ethical culture. In short, hunting is an activity that promotes cooperation and sharing because it entails the pursuit of a highly valued resource, access to which is unpredictable and risky.Anthropologists report that while both men and women hunt, in the vast majority of human societies this activity is predominantly male. Yet, it is not self-evident why males are more likely to hunt than females. Scholarly interpretations of the 1990s link hunting to sexual activity and rewards. While the matter is debated among social scientists, some researchers argue that males are motivated to hunt not only because of the food they acquire but because of the social esteem and increased sexual opportunities enjoyed by successful hunters.

The Hydro-Blast(TM) Aqueous Cleaning Station is an all new concept in aqueous cleaning. By combining four of the most popular cleaning technologies, the Cleaning Station is said to be the ultimate cleaning system. By centralizing the washing process, a variety of economies can be achieved. A single heat source reduces energy costs. The space saving skid design allows for easy placement and portability. Jet Spray Washing Technology uses high volumes of hot water and biodegradable chemical to clean heavily soiled parts. Parts are placed on a rotating turntable and cleaned with high impact, zero degree jets. This water is strained and reused in the spray washer.

Like Mike Christopherson (Readers Forum, Dec. 1), I wondered why the state of Utah was accumulating such a big sum of money when the roads around the state badly need fixing and schoolteachers are underpaid. I read his letter to my husband. He said, “I know the reason. Theyre just like me. I would rather have the money in the bank than buy a new suit.” Spanish Fork
Q:ON DEC. 25, 2006, my wife and I gave our daughter and A: I called the Bank of America media relations in Charlotte, N.C., the banks headquarters, and was referred to San Francisco. When I called San Francisco, I was referred back to Charlotte and after three days of phone-tag with a spokeswoman (not totally her fault), she referred me to a Web site covering the Uniform Commercial Code, which supposedly explains the now-famous rules and regulations. The spokeswoman didnt seem to know how to access the Web site, so told me to call Google.
AND ITS JUST WAITING FOR ENTREPRENEURS TO SHOW UP WITH LOAN APPLICATIONS - BUT YOU HAVE TO KNOW WHERE TO GO. CHECK OUT THE TOP 186 ENTREPRENEUR-FRIENDLY BANKS. Thats the word from Jere Glover, chief counsel for the SBAs Office of Advocacy, who shared with us results from the offices Micro=Business-Friendly Banks in the United States 1999 Edition report. The thing that stands out most about this sixth annual survey of loans of $100,000 or less, says Glover, is that although business lending as a whole has continued an upward climb, the rate of actual dollar amount lent to entrepreneurs has slowed. This is not [as bad as it seems] for business, he says, because weve had rather robust growth through the year [3, 4 and 5 percent]. But now, [with this years 2.5 percent increase], its not growing as fast. Also, the surveys data doesnt indicate how many companies actually tried to get microloans. Consequently, Glover says its difficult to determine if this decrease portends a looming credit crunch.

Some epidemiologic studies have associated higher intakes of the antioxidant nutrients, especially vitamin E, with reduced risks of coronary heart disease. In some studies, this association has been observed for dietary vitamin E, but in other instances, the relationship was seen only in persons taking high doses of vitamin E as supplements. Protective effects of the other antioxidant nutrients - vitamin C and carotenoids - have also been observed in some epidemiological studies, but not in others. In the study population as a whole, there appeared to be a trend toward reduced coronary risk with higher vitamin E intake, but it was not statistically significant. Among women who did not take vitamin supplements, dietary vitamin E intake did show a significant inverse association with coronary heart disease risk. Women in the highest quintile of vitamin E intake had less than half the risk of death from coronary heart disease of women in the lowest quintile. Foods associated with reduced risk included margarine, nuts and seeds, and mayonnaise and creamy salad dressings. Intakes of vitamin A, vitamin C, and supplementary vitamin E did not appear to be associated with the risk of death from coronary disease. These findings suggest that vitamin E intake may be protective against coronary heart disease in postmenopausal women and that such women can lower their risk without using vitamin supplements. However, the authors could not rule out the possibility that vitamin E consumed in food might be a marker for other dietary factors associated with coronary risk. The lack of effect of vitamin E in supplements should be interpreted with caution because information on the duration of supplement use was not available for this cohort and because relatively few women used high-dose supplements of vitamin E.
Although Tanzanias standard of care recommends that children receive a dose of vitamin A every six months, trial results showed that maternal vitamin A supplementation increased HIV transmission to children. The studys data and safety monitoring board recommended that vitamin A be discontinued from the trial regimen in September 2000. The researchers note in their article, Among HIV-infected US men, the relationship between vitamin A intake and HIV disease progression and mortality was U-shaped, suggesting that both low and high levels of intake are potentially harmful. The group that received multivitamins had higher CD4+ levels and significantly lower viral loads than those on placebo. (Vitamin A combined with the multivitamin was less effective.) Women taking the multivitamin had less fatigue, fewer acute upper respiratory tract infections, fewer rashes, and fewer oral and gastrointestinal problems associated with HIV/AIDS. These women were also less likely to reach WHO stage 4 or die of AIDS-related illness than those taking a placebo. I wonder if the inclusion of minerals known to support the immune system (i.e., selenium, zinc) in the multivitamin formula would increase this benefit. Retail prices for a years supply of the multivitamins used in the trial average about $15 per person. Fawzi WW, Msamanga GI, Spiegelman D et al. AIRLINE INDUSTRY INFORMATION-(C)1997-2002 M2 COMMUNICATIONS LTD A Lufthansa aircraft en route from Frankfurt to Munich was forced to turn back shortly after takeoff due to a defective coffee machine. The pilot of the aircraft, an Airbus A300, was forced to abort the journey and return to Frankfurt airport as the coffee machine began emitting smoke around 15 minutes after the flight departed.
I am addicted to coffee. My machine is eight years old but I think its like an old barrel, impregnated with flavour, because it still produces good coffee. It has lots of quirks but I cant do without it - I even take it on holiday.

ShredSmarts document destruction truck will shred the documents, which will then be recycled by Goldman Recycling. Participants will also receive ID theft prevention educational materials from the BBB.
Many paper recyclers who enter the document destruction business are familiar with aspects of plant layout and matching production equipment (balers and screens) to anticipated volume. But the information destruction industry also brings new considerations, such as choosing the right mobile shredding truck for on-site customers and shredding equipment that provides optimal particle size. TRUCKING. Paper recyclers entering the secure shredding sector may have some familiarity with selecting equipment for on-site customer use if they have ever placed balers in warehouses or store rooms.

Developing a “Culture of Safety” A year ago we wrote about the complex process involved in identifying, categorizing, and assessing medical error in health care in the United States (”Assessing Medical Error in Health Care,” Health Progress, November– December 2001, pp. 14-17). That article discussed the 1999 Institute of Medicine (IOM) report on medical error, “To Err Is Human,” and the erosion of public trust in U.S. health care.
FOR THE uninitiated, medical and health insurance is a relatively new class of insurance in Malaysia compared to motor, fire or personal accident insurance. A lot has been written about it, but there continues to be confusion over what health insurance really is.

IT is hardly surprising there is a growing crisis in social housing with no new council homes having been built for two decades. Soaring property prices coupled with fewer homes available has led to local authorities being unable to meet demand. And regenerating existing stock cannot be done quickly enough to ease the problem in the short term.

By Lindsey Geisler The Governors Annual Easter Egg Hunt was anything but a sure bet this year. Storms that raged Friday night threatened to continue into Saturday. That would have forced the event to move to a downtown parking garage where candy would have been handed out.
After seeing the picture on page 75 of the October 2005 issue, I beg the question, What on Earth were you thinking?! publishing such a spectacle for the world to see. The photo of target practice to end the life of a defenseless and otherwise benign beast sends all the wrong messages about guns and those who own and use them. I was particularly dismayed because it gives gun owners and users the reputation as senseless takers of life for no other reason but for target practice. Shame on the ones using their weapons this way!
Is your credit union on the hunt for a new core processing system? If so, be aware that nobodys going to make it easy for you. In fact, sometimes theyll do quite the opposite. If vendors arent going to tell you what you want to know, who is? You are, but youll have to do a little digging. Dont accept proclamations at face value. Unearth some skeletons. And never lose sight of the way you want to serve your members, because thats why youre looking for a core processor in the first place.

It is difficult to write objectively and dispassionately of something about which one feels strongly, for or against. Tell me a mans a foxhunter and I loves him at once said Mr Jorrocks. Today he is more likely to be an object of censure, Mr Jorrocks too. The future of hunting hangs in the balance, a prospect unthinkable to Will Ogilvie who wrote in the twenties:

WE CONFESS TO SKEPTICISM when the University of Arkansas sent a press release saying the school would be making an announcement of epic proportions. Exaggeration being common in press releases, we initially suspected that four previously undiscovered parking places had been identified on campus. Its been Chancellor John Whites goal ever since coming to the university to turn it into a nationally competitive research university. And thats exactly what this gift can help do. This unprecedented generosity from the Walton family will transform the University of Arkansas for our students and faculty and in the process position us to serve as a powerful engine of economic development and cultural change for the entire state, White said. What the Walton family has done today will improve life in Arkansas for generations to come, and we are grateful beyond words.
